Summary

We seek experienced scout/cub/explorer leaders, or enthousiastic people willing to learn, for Saturday activities with children 7-11, 11-14 and 14-18

Detailed description

Scouting Haagse Hout is a small, informal, inclusive Dutch scout group with about 60 young members. The children are divided into the age groups Cubs (7-11y), Scouts (11-15y) and Explorers (15-18y).

What you'll be doing

If you like being outdoors, you're up for a challenge, and you'd like to help children develop and grow, and informally teach them skills, this is your chance. Together with enthousiastic colleagues you will plan and implement a programme of activities such as:

Strategy games (Live Strategy is a firm favourite), navigating, hiking and biking, campfire skills, outdoor cooking, camping, crafts, pioneering with poles and ropes, raft building, geocaching, ball games, learning about nature, survival skills, fundraising, helping out at local events like Kings Day.

There are two weekend camps and one week-long camp per year. Summer camp is always the first week of the Dutch summer holidays.

You will mentor young people, help them in their personal development.

You can work on improving yourself and scouts, for example by doing courses

You'll meet up regularly with the other volunteers and partake in group discussions

You'll participate in regional or national events with your team/youth members

And as the main language is Dutch, you will soon learn the language! With the safety net that the other leaders and many of the children can do English for you if necessary.

What we require

  • You enjoy working with children
  • a weekly commitment of 2-4 hours
  • enthousiasm, good at organising or improvising or both
  • Willing to get a Certificate of Conduct (necessary for working with children, we will help you and it doesn't cost you anything)
  • Prepared to commit to the role and learn

Time

  • 3-4 hours a week including preparation and meetings
  • annually 1 week camp and 2 weekends

We offer

  • Inspiring work, really making a difference to young people's lives
  • Opportunities for training, both regional and national courses
  • Meet new people, expand your network
  • Personal growth, develop skills and knowledge for the future
  • Have lots of fun
  • Unique opportunity to practise Dutch and integrate
  • Great addition to your CV
